P003 → Seeds&Soil
Seeds&Soil is a support group I developed for young carers aged 11-18. This project is based on the 'Caring Culture' RSA brief.
1/5 young people are young carers, and these additional responsibilities have a huge impact on their education and future opportunities.
I spoke with a few young carers who gave me an insight into their life. This was extremely helpful in developing a community which is actually needed.
From these conversations, I gathered that loneliness and struggling to make friends due to feeling 'different' or being too busy were two of the main issues they experienced.
Being a young carer means you are forced to grow up much faster than your peers, missing out on huge parts of your childhood. I didn't want 'Seeds&Soil' to be another website that feels adult, as it's not built for adults, it's a community for the young people caring for them.
I did this by ensuring the branding was colourful and friendly, using bright colours and playful typefaces. As well as this, the language used is casual, these children have to live with these varying levels of responsibilities, and I don't want it to feel more intense through serious language.
Identifying your responsibilities, which are more than others your age, is sometimes hard to see.
This is why I decided to design a range of wobblers with prompts on one side and a QR code on the other side, which takes you to the Seeds&Soil website.
These wobblers are located in places that young carers tend to visit as a part of their everyday tasks, such as supermarkets and pharmacies.
