The civil war in Burma is the longest ongoing civil war to speak of, beginning in 1948.

Since gaining independence from Britain in 1948, Myanmar (Burma) has faced a civil war between the government, the military, and various ethnic and political groups fighting for autonomy and power. The conflict worsened after a military coup in 2021, leading to nationwide resistance, with ethnic armed groups and pro-democracy fighters battling the military junta for control of the country.
More than 20,000 people have been detained and thousands killed, the UN says, since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021 – triggering an uprising.
Several million refugees are living in camps along the borders of the five different countries that Burma shares a border with. Additionally, there is another one million Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) living in the jungles of Burma as a result of attacks on their villages by the military Dictatorship that has been firmly in power since 1962.

The photos come from photographer Bryan Dickie, who spent a prolonged period of time in Burma before the uprising in 2021.
